I Love Cream Cheese

Dear Philadelphia Cream Cheese People,

As I placed a bagel into the toaster this morning and opened the fridge, I was stunned to find that I had run out of Philadelphia Cream Cheese.  Usually my wife and I keep a container of the “1/3 Less Fat” brand on hand at all times, but she must’ve finished it without my knowledge.

The moment I realized that my breakfast was pretty much ruined, I felt a deep sadness.  I mean, I was truly distraught.  It was at that point in time that I realized… cream cheese is my new favorite food.

For years I had claimed my favorite food was barbeque sauce.  But lately I found myself going off the sauce in favor of ketchup – I think that barbeque sauces nowadays are often just too damn sweet.  I hadn’t really noticed the switch until I found myself lacking cream cheese this morning.

I mean I am really upset that I don’t have cream cheese!

I think that my view of cream cheese has been that it is more like butter than like cheese.  That probably stems from my use of it mostly on things like bagels and toast.  Maybe I should also be putting it on crackers and sandwiches.  I’ve also seen cream cheese used in things like icing and sushi rolls.

I’m beginning to realize that the versatility of cream cheese is completely underrated.  At least, it was underrated by me.  I feel like the guy that wasn’t let in on the joke.  I mean… this stuff is really good!  I found a list of recipes that use cream cheese online at www.lovemyphilly.com and expect to start trying a few of them out in the coming weeks.

I have often flirted with the flavored cream cheeses you offer in the supermarket.  I always want the Chives & Onion, but my wife wants the Strawberry.  So we usually settle matters by just getting Plain.  But now that I’ve recognized cream cheese as my favorite food, I think I’m just going to go try them all.

We always get the little tub-containers too - not the bricks in aluminum foil. Going to the mini plastic containerswas one of the better packaging decisions you have made. The bricks work to some extent, but when you put the brick back in the fridge, it just never closed sufficiently. It was always folded over and looked dirty and made you wonder how long it had been sitting there and if it was still good - even if it was before the expiration date. The tubs alleviate that fear and are much more convenient.

I just wanted to take the time to write and say thanks for sticking with me.  As long as you keep putting it on the shelf, I’ll keep taking it off.

Sincerely,

Scott Riecke
